Rested... and Ready: Finding Your Focus for the New Semester

The transition back to campus after winter break is a unique moment. Having spent the last decade supporting young adults through these transitions, I’ve seen that the "post-break" phase is often defined by a delicate balance: you are hopefully feeling rested, but you also need to stay focused.

While the fall term ended with a push for completion, the start of the spring term is about momentum. You’ve had the chance to step away from the rigors of CIP appointments and academic deadlines; now is the time to channel that renewed energy into a successful return.

As you settle back into your routine, we encourage you to embrace these two pillars for a strong start:

1. Protect Your Peace (Keep the Rest)

Don’t let the "return-to-campus" rush immediately drain the battery you just recharged.

  • Honor your downtime: Continue to find small pockets of time for the restorative activities you enjoyed over break.

  • Ease in: You don’t have to do everything on day one. Prioritize your most important appointments first and build from there.

2. Sharpen Your Focus (Find the Flow)

Rest is most effective when it serves as a foundation for action. To prevent the "post-holiday slump," it’s time to re-engage the executive functioning skills you’ve worked so hard to develop.

We suggest refocusing on these high-impact habits this week:

  • The "Launch" Routine: Re-establish a consistent wake-up time. Getting your circadian rhythm back on track is the fastest way to clear brain fog.

  • Active Hygiene: Return to the daily self-care rituals that help you feel prepared and professional.

  • Life Skill Check-in: Take ownership of your space immediately—unpack, manage your initial grocery budget, and plan your meals for the week.

Looking Ahead

The hard work you did during the fall term didn't disappear over break; it’s the floor you are standing on now. By combining the clarity that comes from rest with the discipline of a solid routine, you are setting yourself up for an incredible semester.

Welcome back! Let’s make this term your most focused one yet.
