In-Focus features a staff member as a way to learn more about our amazing staff. This time, we highlight CIP Long Beach Academic Coach, Karen Sok.

We asked Karen a few questions about her role, her CIP experience, and what she does when she’s not at the Long Beach Center.

What’s your most memorable CIP experience?

I have had plenty of memorable moments at CIP but my most memorable was having an incredible time being an evening shift lead during the summer@CIP 2021 at the Great Wolf Lodge. I facilitated different exciting activities and the one I enjoyed the most was called Chubby Bunny. We had a blast. Another memorable CIP moment is receiving the award for Staff of the Year for 2021-22.

What have you most learned in your time at CIP?

Having grown tremendously in two years, I have learned to be patient, empathetic, and understanding to my students and support staff.

How has CIP helped you grow in your career?

CIP has helped me strengthen my leadership skills, create strong boundaries, valuable lessons in accountability, expand my creativity, and gain confidence in myself.

What’s your favorite part about working at CIP?

My favorite part about working at CIP is seeing students having a “eureka” moment when they independently figure out a solution to a problem.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

A fun fact about me is that I am very competitive.

Is there anything your colleagues don’t know about you that you’d like to share?

My colleagues do not know that I would love to SkyDrive one day. It’s on my bucket list.
